Sage Award for College Juniors in Agro-Forestry

The New York State Maple Producers’ Association (NYSMPA) is pleased to announce a Memorial Award honoring the life time work of the late Roger C. Sage.  For over 50 years, Roger demonstrated a passion and engagement in the maple industry locally, statewide, nationally and internationally.  A goal of the NYSMPA and the Sage Award Committee is to encourage the advancement of students engaged in forestry and related sciences who are addressing woodland-based production with an emphasis in non-timber outputs.  The Sage Award will be given annually to a deserving undergraduate student who has completed the equivalent of their Junior year (90 cr. Hrs.) while enrolled in an approved Baccalaureate program in Forestry, Natural Resources, Food Sciences, Natural Resource Economics or an applicable plant science curriculum.  Priority consideration will be given to applicants who show studies relating to maple syrup or value-added northern hardwood products.

Eligibility

The applicant must:

  1. Be a New York State resident,
  2. Be majoring in one of the curricula identified above,
  3. Possess a 3.0/4.0 grade point average
  4. Complete the NYSMPA Sage Award application,
  5. Provide a copy of your academic transcript (advisor’s copy will suffice)
  6. Present a written statement of career goals and include how this award will assist those goals,
  7. Present a scholarly work (essay) equivalent to a 500 word paper representing an aspect of candidate’s original work,
  8. Provide a resume,
  9. Provide a letter of recommendation from student’s academic advisor
  10. Provide contact information for one additional unrelated reference

Application Forms and Deadlines

Award forms are available from the New York State Maple Producers Association office at 301 Myron Rd., Syracuse, NY 13219 or by going to the NYSMPA website at: nysmaple.com/SAGEAWARD.  The Sage Award decision will be based on: a points system following evaluation by a committee charged with ranking all submissions.  Emphasis for ranking will include:  Scholastic preparedness, applicant’s involvement in agroforestry (maple in particular), extracurricular activities, application responses and quality of the written essay. The Sage Award Committee will review and evaluate all applications, make a final decision and recommend an award candidate and level of award to the Board of Directors of the NYSMPA.
